JONATHAN I SHENKMAN,
FINANCIAL ADVISOR, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR-INVESTMENTS
PORTFOLIO MANAGER, OMEGA PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT
Jonathan I. Shenkman is a financial advisor, portfolio manager and the founder of the Shenkman Private Client Group of Oppenheimer & Co. Inc.
Jonathan focuses on working with his clients to comprehensively address various aspects of their retirement planning. He has deep experience developing retirement saving strategies for high earners, managing the proceeds from the sale of a business or other major liquidity events, and generating tax efficient cash flow to address a client’s income needs. Additionally, Jonathan spends much of his time working together with his client’s other trusted advisors to help facilitate and manage various tax, estate, and financial planning strategies.
Jonathan works with many clients who have experienced a challenging life event including the dissolution of a family business, leaving a long-time employer, divorce, death of a spouse, or issues related to aging, chronic illness, or cognitive health. He often serves as the financial point person in such situations to help the family hire the right team of advisors to get their investments and financial planning in order.
A strong proponent of giving objective advice, Jonathan doesn’t have any proprietary products to “sell” to his clients. Rather, he believes in giving holistic wealth planning guidance, which includes working with outside asset management firms to provide the most appropriate solution for his clients’ needs. Additionally, his prudent philosophy towards managing money includes not chasing the latest fad, exotic investment strategy, or exclusive deal that may sour. Jonathan’s judicious approach towards managing risk helps clients’ portfolios withstand the test of time for the benefit of their beneficiaries and future generations.
Before joining Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., Jonathan spent time at both Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch, where he worked with entrepreneurs, real estate investors, athletes, entertainers and partners at major law and accounting firms. He also spent time in the research department for several buy-side investment boutiques.
Jonathan is an active contributor in his field. He has facilitated over 100 monthly symposia geared towards accountants and attorneys on various cutting edge topics in the area of wealth management. He is an avid writer, with works published in Barron's, CCH, Forbes, Kiplinger, NASDAQ.COM, Leimberg Information Services, TaxStringer, WealthManagement.com, Trust & Estates Magazine, The CPA Journal, and Yahoo! Finance. He is also the recipient of the 2018 Rising Star award through Trust & Estates Magazine.
Passionate about giving back, Jonathan is a supporter of various local and Jewish charitable organizations. He is especially fond of the great work done by the UJA Federation of New York where he serves as a member of their Trust & Estates Group.
